1. Paddy Wagon escape route

The Paddy Wagon is the least item-dependent escape on the list, but it requires sustained effort across the whole team.

Working phones scattered around Haddonfield are your primary tool. Each successful call builds police response, and NPC residents can add to that pressure once they believe Michael is a real threat. As police presence climbs and officers investigate evidence in the neighborhood, the Paddy Wagon eventually arrives and parks as an active escape point.

Civilians enter through the back, and NPC residents can board when space allows. The interaction is not instant, though. Michael can interrupt a phone call mid-attempt, so always scan your surroundings before committing to one. A call that gets cut short wastes time and potentially reveals your location.

Focus on making clean, successful calls rather than trying to hit any specific meter value. The goal is consistent police activity, not a single threshold.

2. Storm Cellar escape route

The Storm Cellar is one of the more accessible exits once you have the right tool, but the obstacle blocking it changes between matches.

Depending on the round, the entrance might be blocked by boards, vegetation, chains, or a padlock. Some setups require Bolt Cutters to deal with chains, while others accept either a key or Bolt Cutters at the lock. The HUD objective marker will tell you which one applies, so follow that rather than assuming you need a specific item every time.

The process breaks down like this:

1. Locate the Storm Cellar on the map
2. Identify and clear whatever is blocking the entrance
3. Use the required tool (Bolt Cutters or key) to remove the barrier
4. Complete the final opening interaction
5. Escape through the cellar or direct NPC residents toward it

Once the route is open, NPC residents can use it without you manually walking each one over. That makes the Storm Cellar particularly efficient for saving multiple people in one push.

Pro tip: If the entrance is chained, Bolt Cutters are your best friend. If it is padlocked, check whether a key in your inventory works before spending time searching for cutters.

3. Outskirt Gate escape route

The Outskirt Gate sits at the edges of the map and asks for more preparation than the Storm Cellar.

On top of any clearing or unlocking steps, this exit specifically requires a Fuse alongside either a key or Bolt Cutters. That extra requirement makes the Fuse one of the more valuable items on the map, since it has fewer general uses than a standard key.

If you find a Fuse early but cannot carry it, communicate its location to teammates immediately. Losing track of a Fuse and having to search the whole map again when the gate is your best option is a match-losing mistake.

Because these gates are on the outer sections of Haddonfield, map awareness matters when deciding whether the Outskirt Gate is worth the travel time against Michael’s current position.

4. Sedan escape route

The Sedan is the most involved escape route, requiring three separate objectives before the car moves anywhere.

You need a Repair Kit to fix the engine, Gasoline to fill the tank, and the Sedan Key to start the vehicle. All three must be completed before the car becomes driveable.

Repairing the engine

The Repair Kit handles the engine. What makes this step trickier than it sounds is that Michael can damage the vehicle after you have already fixed it. His Blackout ability can also stall a moving car, which means a repaired engine is not permanently safe. If the engine takes damage again, you will need another Repair Kit, so tracking where spares are located around the map is worth the mental overhead.

Filling the gas tank

Gasoline spawns somewhere on the map each match. Communicate its location as soon as someone finds it, because carrying it around without knowing whether the Sedan escape is even viable wastes inventory space and time. Once the car is found and confirmed as the target, the HUD shows which of the three requirements are still missing.

Finding the Sedan Key

The Sedan Key is a distinct item from any padlock key or general key you might pick up. Finding a random key will not complete this step. The item needs to specifically identify itself as the Sedan Key, so read item prompts carefully before assuming you have what you need.

Driving to the exit

Starting the car is not the finish line. The driver needs to reach the escape marker without Michael stopping the vehicle or the Sedan taking enough damage to stall progress. Driving carefully and avoiding situations where Michael can intercept the car matters here, because crashing or letting him reach the vehicle can undo work the team already put in.

Important: Michael’s Blackout ability can stall the Sedan mid-drive. Have a plan for what the team does if the car gets stopped before reaching the exit marker.

What about surviving the night?

Staying alive until the match timer expires is technically listed as part of the Civilian objective, since IllFonic describes the goal broadly as saving residents and surviving the night. However, this is not a clean equivalent to using one of the four physical escape routes above.

Current documentation does not clearly confirm that reaching the timer awards the same outcome or XP as completing an actual escape. If your goal is to escape the map, pursue a real exit. Surviving the night might keep you alive, but it is not a reliable substitute for getting out.

What is the best escape route?

There is no universal answer, and that is by design. Escape locations and item spawns are randomized between matches, so the best route in any given round is the one that needs the least remaining work with what your team already has.

A Repair Kit, Gasoline, and Sedan Key sitting in your inventory makes the car the obvious play. An early Fuse with Bolt Cutters nearby points toward the Outskirt Gate. If nobody has found anything useful but the phones are working, build police response and push for the Paddy Wagon.

The mistake most Civilian players make is locking into one plan and spending the whole match chasing a single missing item while Michael tightens his patrol routes.
